TORREBRUNA is an Italian town of 715 inhabitants in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo. An ancient mountain village located on the slopes of the Apennines close to the mountain known as Torrebruna. Its position dominates the valley of the river Trigno beyond which extends the province of Campobasso in Molise. The top of the mountain above, which is located at 1 150 m a.s.l., dominates a panorama that includes, in addition to the valley of the aforementioned Trigno, the Majella, the villages of Molise, the Gargano, the Adriatic sea, the Tremiti islands. The village has been inhabited since prehistoric times, it was later colonized by the Romans, however the current center is to be linked to the early Middle Ages. Torrebruna is located in a particularly happy geographical position as it can be connected, in a short time, with the coastal areas and with those of the highest mountains. Every year in August the truffle festival takes place which has taken on a role of attraction for the town. The causes that gave rise to the name of the town are not known exactly. Legend has it that the name of Torrebruna originated from an ancient tower located at the highest point of the town, darkened by time. In another version, however, it is said that Torre was inhabited by a noblewoman called Bruna, for which it was called "Torre di Bruna" and then, gradually, it was transformed into Torrebruna. Torrebruna area is rich in important historical and naturalistic attractions not to be missed. Walking through the quaint old town, you will come across various testimonies of that distant past in the walls and gates of the ancient fortified enclosure. It is characterized by its typical stone houses, which arranged in concentric circles gently slope downwards. In the highest part of the village it is possible to admire the Church of the Transfiguration, built in 1615, and its splendid stone portal decorated with Baroque style decorations. Inside there are several works of art: a wooden bust of the Neapolitan school of the '700 which portrays San Placido, a statue of the Madonna delle Grazie, sculpted in the second half of the' 700, canvases by the Abruzzo painter Francesco De Benedictis, and an organ from the 18th century. Guardiabruna, a small hamlet a few kilometers from Torrebruna, is also worth a visit. The ancient fortified village is perched on a steep rise from which, on a sheer spur of rock, the Piccirilli Baronial Palace dominates the oldest part of the village. From here you can enjoy a privileged panorama: towards the south the Valle del Trigno, towards the north the Abruzzo Apennine contours, and towards the east, especially on summer days, you can see the Adriatic coast. In Torrebruna there are two grocery stores, two bars, a pizza restaurant, a shop selling egg pasta and sweets, a post office, and a B&B.
