For LARINO the celebrations in honor of San Pardo represent a reunion with its history and with a centuries-old tradition. In 842 Larino was sacked by the Saracens who were raging through the south. In this Molise village the Turks also stole the relics of the holy Larinese martyrs, to whom the population was deeply attached. To bring them home the few survivors set off in the direction of Lesina but along the way they stumble upon the tomb which houses the body of San Pardo. The discovery immediately appears as a divine signal and for this reason it is decided to take the body away, placing it in a wagon decorated with colored flowers. Even today in Larino from 24 to 27 May more than one hundred carts parade through the streets of the village, pulled by real oxen or carved in wood. The preparation of the floats is a tradition that involves entire families, who follow a real preparation ritual. Throughout the month of May the women prepare paper flowers, ribbons and blankets which will be placed on the carts only on May 24th. On the 25th the floats leave from a chapel dedicated to the Larinese martyr San Primiano, carrying the statue of the saint in procession throughout the night, approaching the historic centre. On May 26th the floats parade from one end of the historic center to the other, also carrying the silver bust of San Pardo and the festival ends on May 27th, when San Primiano is brought back to his home and after having attended the mass a 'cheerful restorative excursion that ends at the cathedral of Larino, where the statue of San Pardo is placed. The tradition of the Larinese floats is among the oldest and most evocative of the Christian tradition and brings visitors from all over Italy to the San Leonardo plain.
