SCERNI (Scirne in dialect) is a small hill-top rural town with lovely scenery of 3,645 inhabitants in Chieti province, part of the Middle Vastese. Total area is 41 square kilometres (16 sq mi), and population density is 89 inhab/km2. The county has borders with Atessa, Gissi, Monteodorisio and Pollutri, 20 km to the beach, about 50 minutes drive to the ski resorts, 20 minutes drive to the antique city of Vasto. In the town you can find all what you need, there are many shops, small supermarkets, doctors surgery, post office, library, bank, pharmacies, restaurants. etc. The town is attractive, amid gentle hills and with a mild climate. Best with a car but you can get buses from Scerni to Vasto and Lanciano and even Rome. Trains run from nearby stations to many great locations/cities including Pescara. It is distinguished by the production of olive oil, wine and sausages (the speciality is the Ventricina variety), near golden, sandy beaches and also close to spectacular mountain scenery as well as many interesting historic sites. Scerni has prehistoric origins and was inhabited in ancient Roman times. In the medieval ages, several castles and fortifications were built in and around the city. The current town was established in the middle ages, where the place was a stopping off point on the route for shepherds who practised transhumance and moved their herds down from the mountains to lower pastures in Apulia come the onset of autumn. The church of San Panfilo in Scerni is built on a site which was originally dedicated to the Pagan God Ceres. The town boasts a Castle and has an historic centre. The patron saint of Scerni is San Panfilo and the Saints day is 28th April.
