TORELLA DEL SANNIO is a Molise village located on a hill at 837 m asl, on the left side of the Biferno river valley. The name comes from the word “small tower”. Many researchers trace the origin of the town back to the Iron Age. The first certain news, however, dates back to the 9th century, with the town allegedly built by a group of refugees who arrived from the plains of Biferno and Volturno to escape Saracen attacks. The inhabitants of this enchanting town are just over 700.
The town is mainly structured on two hills: the "Colle" which represents the new part and the "Ciglione" where the oldest part of the town develops, with the castle and the church dominating it. Patron of the town is San Clemente martyr, who is celebrated on 15 October and on the Tuesday following Pentecost. The town is located between the main rivers of the region, Trigno and Biferno and, thanks to its elevated position, it allows you to see a panorama made up of the Maiella and Gran Sasso mountains. In the 1960s, the town suffered depopulation due to emigration to Campobasso or outside the region. Currently the center is based on the agricultural economy, on construction and on services.
Interesting to visit is the castle, the flagship and main attraction of the town, built around the year 1000, also due to the story of Elena Ciamarra, a painter of considerable depth and the castle houses hundreds of her beautiful works on display and archived. The castle is private and can only be visited in part. The owners, friendly and helpful, open the residence to the public periodically and for special events.
The local amenities: post office, pharmacy, pizzeria, bar, bakery, petrol station, mini market, some clothes shops.
