ACQUAVIVA COLLECROCE is a small town of 641 inhabitants in the province of Campobasso, Molise region, between the Biferno and Trigno rivers surrounded by woodland, wheat fields, olive groves and vineyard, where most of the people speak, apart Italian, a Croatian dialect. Acquaviva is known for the cultivation of small, dark, zerniza figs, as well as fennel and white celery. Some songs and customs are preserved of the Slavic tradition such as the characteristic feast of the "MAJA" (the first of May). The presence of abundant water had evidently to determine both the choice of the site for the settlement that the name of the village: Acquaviva, which was subsequently added Collecroce beyond that for historical reasons, also to distinguish the town from other existing in Italy with the same name. In the entire territory there are several fountains. In the 12th century, Acquaviva was a base for the Knights of Malta. The typical cuisine of Acquaviva Collecroce is still based on the local products and pastoralism with simple dishes that preserve ancient flavors and all its authenticity.
