MONTEODORISIO is an Abruzzo town of about 2,450 inhabitants, which stands on a hill 316 m above sea level, in a panoramic position over the Sinello river valley few km from the Adriatic coast. The locality presents itself to the visitor's eyes with a charming historic centre, offering various cultural and artistic attractions. Walking through the intricate alleys of the historic center of the village, you can still breathe its ancient past as a small county capital. The medieval testimonies are flanked by a few but significant memories of the Roman period and of the Italic people of the Frentani, who settled here at the time. Anyone arriving at is welcomed by the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, built following a series of miraculous events that began in 1886, when, during the restoration work on the old church, a spring of water gushed that healed the sick. Since then pilgrimages have followed one another and the water of the Madonna is collected in a well. The historic center with its walls, watchtowers and gateways to the village evokes its medieval history at every corner. Also interesting is the church of San Giovanni Battista, which preserves the foundation walls and the mighty bell tower of the original fourteenth-century structure which, as in other centers of the Vastese area, was part of the defensive system of the fortified village. The highest part of the fortress is occupied by the majestic and panoramic Castle, which today houses the Museum of Economics between Antiquity and the Renaissance and the Documentation Center of the Franciscan Order in Abruzzo and Molise. Montedorisio has a rich food and wine tradition, among the typical dishes there is the Ventricina, a sausage prepared with pork, chilli pepper, salt and fennel seeds. As for the first courses we have: Sagne a pezzate homemade pasta prepared with durum wheat semolina, salt and water, generally seasoned with fresh tomatoes and Ndernappe, always homemade pasta but prepared with white flour, bran, water and salt, seasoned with a slightly spicy ventricina sauce. Also noteworthy are the Pallotte casce e ove, these are cheese, egg and stale bread balls, fried and then sautéed in a tomato sauce. Wide choice for desserts, Lu Purcellate (Il Porcellato) in primis, was introduced in 1935 on the occasion of the feast of Sant'Antonio Abate, protector of animals. In that circumstance there was a tendency to kill pigs, from which the term "Porcelain" was born. Since then, the sweet began to be sold to the community, in honor of San Marcellino, patron saint of Monteodorisio, and of the Madonna delle Grazie. Scrippelle are no less, made with flour, yeast and water fried in seed oil and covered with granulated sugar. Absolutely to try are the stuffed Celli, modeled in the shape of a horseshoe and produced in two variants: the first with eggs and the second with white wine and the Calzonetti (Caggìnette), usually filled with cream of chickpeas, with almonds and honey or with grape mustard.
